Las Vegas, NV — Southern Hills Hospital has earned The Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval® for its Alzheimer's disease program by demonstrating compliance with The Joint Commission's national standards for health care quality and safety in disease-specific care. The certification award recognizes Southern Hills Hospital's dedication to continuous compliance with The Joint Commission's state-of-the-art standards. It also makes Southern Hills one of two hospitals in the country and the only hospital in Nevada to achieve this certification, as well as the first and only hospital in the USA to focus this initiative on a senior psychiatric unit.
"With Joint Commission certification, we are making a significant investment in quality on a day-to-day basis from the top down. Joint Commission accreditation provides us a framework to take our organization to the next level and helps create a culture of excellence,” said Kimball S. Anderson, Chief Executive Officer (CEO). “Achieving Joint Commission certification in Alzheimer's disease for our organization is a major step toward maintaining excellence and continually improving the care we provide.”
Southern Hills Hospital underwent a rigorous on-site review this month. A Joint Commission expert evaluated Southern Hills Hospital for compliance with standards of care specific to the needs of patients with Alzheimer's disease. The surveyor reviewed quality measures specific to patients with Alzheimer's disease, medication management and leadership.
In January 2012, Southern Hills Hospital opened RISE (Respect, Inspire, Strengthen, Empower) Behavioral Health, a 14-bed, in-patient specialty senior psychiatric unit serving ages
50 and older with behavioral health needs including, but not limited to depression, anxiety disorders, loss of cognitive abilities and more. Additionally, RISE Behavioral Health expanded its services in December 2013 by opening an outpatient clinic that provides both individual therapy and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) geared toward meeting the emotional and behavioral needs of older adults.
"In achieving Joint Commission certification, Southern Hills Hospital has demonstrated its commitment to the highest level of care for its patients with Alzheimer's disease," said Jean Range, M.S., R.N., C.P.H.Q. executive director, Disease-Specific Care Certification, The Joint Commission. “Certification is a voluntary process and I commend Southern Hills Hospital for successfully undertaking this challenge to elevate its standard of care and instill confidence in the community it serves.”
The Joint Commission's Disease-Specific Care Certification Program, launched in 2002, is designed to evaluate clinical programs across the continuum of care. Certification requirements address three core areas: compliance with consensus-based national standards; effective use of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines to manage and optimize care; and an organized approach to performance measurement and improvement activities.
Additionally, Southern Hills Hospital recognizes the needs of the senior citizen population in a healthcare setting. Most recently, Southern Hills identified and implemented programs and elements that specifically assist senior patients, in hopes that their experiences are the best that they can be during a vulnerable time.
The Senior Care Initiative at Southern Hills is aimed at accommodating senior patients and their families in various ways such as, but not limited to:
- Opened RISE Behavioral Health
- Became a NICHE [Nurse Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders] certified hospital (only one of two hospitals in Las Vegas), enhancing the care and education of our nursing staff specifically focused on special care for senior patients.
- Added amenities in the Emergency Department such as painted door moldings to visually aid in depth perception while navigating in the ER; installed wall clocks with enlarged numbers for easier reading; and purchased senior-friendly furniture providing ease when sitting and/or standing in ER rooms.
- Created senior citizen-reserved parking spaces in the ER parking lot, providing closer access to hospital entrances.
- Implemented animal-assisted therapy in the RISE Behavioral Health unit, with plans to expand pet therapy to additional units in the hospital.
- Employed a Care Assure Nurse Navigator, an RN dedicated to caring for cardiac patients during and after their hospital stay ensuring patients receive the follow up care necessary for the greatest recovery.
