Program Curriculum Highlights & Rotation Schedule

Overview of clinical experience:

Fellows gain clinical experience across all levels of addiction-focused care, from inpatient acute psychiatric care, inpatient consultation service and a range of outpatient rotations.  Clinical rotations and community partners include:

1. Southern Hills Hospital and Medical Center  

Southern Hills Hospital is a 262+ bed acute care general hospital with an 80-bed Pavilion for behavioral health care.

Fellows spend 2 blocks on the Adult Inpatient Psychiatry service and serve as consultants on the Psychiatric Consult Service covering the medical-surgical services and the emergency department.

 

2. Landmark Recovery Las Vegas (2 blocks)

Landmark Recovery is a national enterprise with seven freestanding addiction treatment centers across four states. Landmark Recovery Las Vegas has a capacity for 48 patients, with a planned expansion to 90 beds by late 2021. The full spectrum of services is provided from patient and family assessment, inpatient detox, residential treatment and partial hospitalization with a transition to the continuum of outpatient treatment programs (IOP and OP). ASAM Criteria and Levels of Care are utilized across the continuum of services, structuring care and interventions accordingly.

Fellows rotate at Landmark Recovery for 3 blocks, working with the multi-disciplinary team.  During these blocks, they rotate through the various levels of care and also provide liaison services for patients admitted to MountainView Hospital or Southern Hills Hospital.

3. Center for Behavioral Health(CBH)

Center for Behavioral Health (CBH) is a non-profit company with 3 addiction treatment centers in Las Vegas among its 21 facilities in 8 states across the United States. CBH facilities provide the full range of outpatient treatments as a federally licensed opiate treatment program (OTP).

Key to its services, CBH provides outpatient-based opioid treatment (OBOT), including all three federally approved medications for opiate use disorder (OUD): buprenorphine (in all its formulations), naltrexone (eg., Vivitrol), and methadone. Supporting efforts in harm reduction, CBH created the first syringe vending machine based in one of its Las Vegas treatment centers.

Fellows spend 2-3 blocks rotating through the various Las Vegas sites, gaining experience in methadone maintenance as well as focused training in buprenorphine induction and maintenance, and naltrexone, including injectable formulations.

4. The VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System(VASNHS)

The VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System (VASNHS) in North Las Vegas is a full service medical center with fellow rotations combining service and training on the Acute Inpatient Psychiatry service and in the Addiction Disorders Treatment Program (ADTP), the Las Vegas VA Residential Recovery & Renewal Center (LVR3).

Fellows gain experience during their 2 blocks at the VASNHS, working with veterans who have complex co-occurring disorders and participating in the gambling addiction program unique to the VA system.

5. CrossRoads of Southern Nevada

CrossRoads of Southern Nevada is a campus network of services in the Medical District of Las Vegas, serving a safety net population of individuals with substance use disorders, including those under court mandates. Services are provided in their primary facility with 100 beds for acute detox, residential treatment, partial hospitalization, and sober living facilities.

Fellows spend ½ day per week in the nearby CrossRoads Outpatient Clinic, providing general medical care as well as managing a panel of patients with substance use disorders, many of whom are graduates of the treatment services at CrossRoads Recovery.

6. Electives are available in Non-Interventional Pain Management, HIV/HepC Care, Homeless Outreach, Correctional Medicine, Perinatal Addiction and Management of Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, and Critical Care/ICU with focus on management of complicated withdrawal
