3D mammography in Las Vegas

3D mammography is a new screening and diagnostic breast imaging service designed to improve the early detection of breast cancer. We are proud to now offer a breast tomosynthesis solution using advanced 3D imaging technology.

We use a low-dose short X-ray sweep around the positioned breast with nine exposures acquired with a “step-and-shoot” method. This unique process removes the potential motion from the tube, helping to reduce blur and increase image sharpness. With this equipment, there is no increase in radiation dose from a 2D standard mammogram to a 3D view. This means there is no increased radiation to patients during the 3D breast exam.

Recommendations for breast cancer screening

Breast cancer prevention is a priority at Southern Hills Hospital. Self-examinations are essential to ongoing breast care, and early detection is the most effective cure. To help guide you, here are the recommendations for breast cancer screenings:

  • Monthly breast self-examination starting at 20 years old
  • Physical examinations by a health care provider every three years starting at 20 years old
  • Annual clinical breast physical exams starting at 40 years old
  • Annual screening mammography starting at 40 years old

In addition to these guidelines, women between 45 and 54 years old should get mammograms every year. Also, women 55 years old and older can either schedule a mammogram every other year or continue with annual exams. Screenings should continue as long as a woman is in good health and is expected to live at least 10 more years.
